![]() About MeMy professional background I qualified in 1999 with an MA in Counselling Studies from Durham University, and have been working as a counsellor for 10 years. I'm accredited by The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), and follow the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice, which means I comply with their professional standards, including taking part in regular supervision and continuing professional development. I have experience of working in a number of settings, including NHS, workplace and student counselling services. For the last 9 years I've provided a counselling service to GP Practices in the Durham and Chester le Street area, and I'm also a trained bereavement counsellor. My counselling approach Most counsellors approach their work in a way that reflects their background and training. My own approach is humanistic and person-centred. This means I believe each person has an inbuilt potential to grow and go forward in his or her own way, and that the best way to help you do this is by offering a way of relating that empowers you to tap into your own strength and resources. Mostly this involves the two of us talking, but it can also include other kinds of self-expression, depending on your needs at the time and whether or not you wish to work in this way. I have a particular interest in Focusing, which helps people to tune into their felt sense of an issue or problem. A 'felt sense' can feel like a vague knowing, often experienced as a physical or emotional feeling in the body that is at first difficult to put into words. Tuning into this can deepen your understanding of yourself and the things that matter to you, which can be helpful and is often also extremely rewarding. |
